Paihias Summer of Fun
Paihia has been a great place for families to holiday this January with the Family Fun Festival providing heaps of entertainment each day. The Paihia Business Association organised a wide range of fun events with sponsorship from Fullers Bay of Islands and lots of support from other local businesses. |
The sandcastle competition was the opening event in a fun-packed programme and hundreds of people crowded onto the beach where participants created some superb entries. Mermaids, dragons, turtles, crocodiles and the Great Wall of China were amongst the eye-catching creations and the Americas Cup inspired some wonderful yacht designs. Bruce Farr, yacht designer, had better watch out. |
The Fun Sports with Sport Northland provided an exciting morning for a large number of families with lots of challenges for all ages. Children pulled each other on trolleys, dressed in firemens coats and crawled under tarpaulins, tried to stay on their feet with team-walking blocks, and used all sorts of sticks and balls to negotiate the obstacle courses. |
Young artists showed heaps of creativity with pavement drawing, a good way to spend a morning. Frank Habicht, international photographer had the difficult job of judging the winners. Another day saw the creation of a wildly colourful monster mural featuring a seaside theme. |
The littlies enjoyed a session of tall tales and intriguing legends one day when the weather was a bit wet. Here you see them helping out with the dramatisation of a Maori legend. |
Luckily the sun returned for the exciting beach dig where dozens of children moved surprising amounts of sand digging for numbered markers to claim some great prizes. This young competitor is wasting no time racing for his prize. |
Adults as well as children enjoyed a very interesting walk through Paihias history and a twilight bush walk on a beautiful evening to the viewpoint high on the hills behind Paihia. The Paihia Dive fishing competition attracted lots of budding fishers, all of whom won prizes for their efforts. Main prizes were for heaviest fish, longest fish and strangest fish, the latter won by the child who briefly caught a seagull! |
Other events included mini golf, a day at Lilypond Farm and a kite flying fiesta. The prize patrol from Radio KCC FM joined in the fun at lots of events with hot hamburgers, drinks and giveaways and Sun Smart were there to help the children stay safe in the sun. The organisers received lots of very positive feedback from visitors with many commenting on the great time they had had in Paihia. |

Feedback
To The Paihia Business Association
We would like to say thank you to all who were involved in the organization of the recent children's events. Our children were able to attend some of the events and really did have a wonderful time at each. It was great to see so many kids involved and who all went home so happy.
With thanks The Cormick Family
